After our marathon in Napa this past Saturday, our families and ourselves decided to go into Calistoga for the afternoon and for a much needed rich, delicious, and completely satisfying Italian meal.
Having finished lunch, we stopped back by a coffee shop we had passed while walking to the restaurant. Lo and behold, sitting in front of that coffee shop was none other than one of our fellow race competitors (although, I’m not sure any of us were doing much competing...I think we were mainly all just trying not to die). In fact, this particular gentleman had played a sort of leap frog with us during the run, eventually finishing just ahead of us.
My husband, being the very personable man that he is, struck up a conversation with the man, discussing how our bodies were doing after the race. This man then started telling us about a ginger-turmeric-coconut milk drink that he makes to help with the soreness. Maybe it was my body’s insatiable desire for rich and delicious sustenance after the race, or my desire to curb the pain searing through my legs post-race (or maybe, a little of both), but gosh darn it, my sister, husband and myself made ourselves that very drink later in the evening. And it was so delicious that we thought we’d share it with you!
Ginger Turmeric Post-Race Milk Tea (3 servings)
- ¼ c. turmeric
- ½ c. water
- 3 c. coconut milk
- 2 tsp. turmeric paste
- 2 tsp. fresh ginger
- ½ tsp. black pepper
- 1 Tbsp. organic cane sugar
In a medium sauce pan, mix together ¼ c. turmeric and water. Simmer until it thickens into a paste. Place paste in tupperware and store in fridge for later and continued use.
For the tea, pour milk in saucepan and heat over medium heat. Add turmeric paste, ginger, pepper, and sugar. Stir occasionally, heating for another 5-10 minutes. You can strain the mixture if you don’t want the consistency of the seasonings, otherwise, enjoy!
